Are there differences between weight loss supplements and weight loss drugs?
Weight loss supplements are different from weight loss drugs. Weight Loss Supplements are defined under FDA as dietary supplement; the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA 1994), states that a dietary supplement is a product taken by mouth that contains a "dietary ingredient" intended to supplement diet.
Dietary ingredient is defined by DSHEA of 1994 as a combination of a vitamin, mineral, an herb, or other botanical plants, amino acid, a dietary substance for use by man to supplement the diet by increasing the total dietary intake (e.g. enzymes or tissues from organs or glands) or a concentrate, metabolite, constituent or extract.
A drug, is defined by FD&C act as "articles intended for use in the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease "and" articles (other than food) intended to affect the structure or any function of the body of man or other animals" (FD&C sec, 201 (g) (1))
Weight loss pills are either weight loss supplements or weight loss drugs. There are two types of weight loss pills, synthetic chemical and natural.
Understanding fats in our body
Based on the studies and research work of Dr. Susan Fried and colleagues, the director of Clinical Nutrition Research Unit of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore; a person living a healthy life has a count of 10 to 20 billion fat cells, and obese person has 100 billion fat cells!
Fats as it is, is needed by the body. There are three types of fats we have to familiarize ourselves with;
